Family Pictures

These are pictures of my family. Some of them are quite old and I didn't take them. This is due to various relatives that have had me scan the old family albums, so that's how I acquired copies of them. Most of the rest of them I took because I inherited the title of family photographer from my Mom when I was 15.

I think family history like this from the past is important because after all, it…  (read more)

Sarah Nunn

26 Apr 2019 6 226
This is my Great Great Great Grandmother, Sarah Nunn. Her, her husband and children sailed to America from Chatres, Isle of Ely, England in 1849 and landed in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her daughter, Sarah S. Nunn, married William S. Bowles and they were my Great Great Grandparents. Their daughter, Ella Mae Bowles married John W. Garrett and they were my Great Grandparents. Their daughter, Martha Lolove Garrett married John Dewey William McKinley Wright and were my Grandparents and the parents of my Mom, Ella Carolyn (Wright) Harrelson.

Great Great Grandma and Grandpa Bowles

These are my Great Great Grandparents William and Sarah Bowls when they were quite young. This original picture was yellowed and almost faded away to nothing, that's why it looks so grainy. But, I have two of these pictures and both are in the same condition. They were married in 1863, so I'm not sure if this was their wedding picture. Sarah isn't wearing a traditional white wedding dress, so I don't know if maybe she just couldn't afford one. Either way, I'm pretty sure it was taken in the 1860s.

Sarah and William Bowles

My Great Great Grandparents, Sarah S. (Nunn) Bowles and William S. Bowles. This looks to have been taken professionally in a studio. This was an old picture that I photographed and the resulting negative was 30 years old when I scanned it recently. So, it's a picture of a picture and not as clear as the original.

Distant Relatives

10 Nov 2014 5 11 468
This is a photograph of some distant relatives of mine on my Mother's side, taken in the 1800's. Sepia tone and all. People can sometimes look quite severe from a past era like this. I wouldn't want to meet that woman in a dark alley! Edit to add: The back of the picture lists these people as being Aunt Lizzie and Uncle E.B. Sansom; Grandpa Bowle's sister and family. The Grandpa Bowles in question would have been my Grandmother's grandfather. My Mom's mom was Lolove Wright, nee Garrett and her Mom's name was Ella Garrett. My Mother was named after her Grandmother, Ella Garrett, so my Mom's name was Ella Carolyn Wright. (Until she married Dad and became a Harrelson) She went by Carolyn, though. So, this couple would have been my Great-Great-Grandfather Bowles' sister and her husband.

Great Great Grandparent Bowles

These are my Great Great Grandparents, William S. Bowles and Sarah S. (Nunn) Bowles. They both, separately, came over from England and landed in New Orleans, Louisiana and migrated to Evansville, Indiana and then settled in Maunie, Illinois, located in the Southeastern corner of Illinois. I'm not sure if they met in Evansville or Maunie. Update: William S. Bowles came over from England to New Orleans in 1849, when he was 12 years old. Sarah S. Nunn came over from England to New Orleans around the same time, when she was 7 1/2 years old.

Aunt Lizzie Sansom And William And Sarah Bowles

This is my Great Great Grandparents William S. Bowles and Sarah S. (Nunn) Bowles and William's sister Lizzie Sansom, on the right. I think the reason Lizzie is called Aunt Lizzie on the back of the picture is because it was written by Ella Mae Bowles, William and Sarah's daughter and my Great Grandmother.

Grandmother Bowles' Sister Mrs. Martha Emma White

14 Apr 2014 1 408
This is my Great Grandmother Ella Mae Bowles' sister (after she had married), Mrs. Martha Emma White, from my Mother's side of the family. There are a lot more pictures from Mom's side of the family because some of them apparently had quite a bit of money. The money apparently didn't filter down to my Grandmother or Mom.

Ella Mae Bowles

This was one of six old tintypes in an envelope marked "Nunn and Bowles Tintypes." The Nunns and Bowles were on my Mother's side of the family. This one was complete while another one of the same pose I found and scanned was not. It's my Great Grandmother Ella Mae Bowles. She sailed over with her family from Chatres, Isle of Ely, England when she was 7 and a half years old and landed in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Old Family Tintype

This is an old tintype I found in the family photos. My late Mom probably acquired it from her sister before she passed away. I found another identical tintype image and this is actually my Great Grandmother Ella Mae Bowles.

John Garrett

The man on the left was my Mom's Grandfather John Garrett. This shot was taken down in Puerto Rico or some place like that, when he was fighting in the Spanish American War.

Ella Mae (Bowles) Garrett

11 Nov 2014 1 373
This is a picture of my Great Grandmother Ella Garrett. She's the one with the "V" marked in pencil toward the middle right. She was my Mom's Grandmother and was named after her. My Mom's name was Ella Carolyn Wright. (Until she married Dad and became a Harrelson.) I don't have a clue who all these people are or what the gathering was. None of the others appear to be relatives, so I don't think it was some kind of family reunion. The original picture was taken off-center like this, I didn't scan it crooked.

Garrett Gathering

11 Mar 2018 2 2 271
This is a real old picture from Mom's side of the family that looks like a Garrett gathering of some kind. Two of the men are cranking some churns - maybe ice cream churns. I'm not sure of the exact year, but I do know that's my Great Grandmother Ella Mae Garrett at the top right, looking off to the side and my Grandmother Martha Lolove Garrett is the girl on the right edge of the picture. Lolove was born in in 1903 and she looks to be around 4 years old in this picture, so it could be from 1907. Three of the people's faces are blurred and unrecognizable because they moved during the long exposure. This was most likely taken in Maunie, Illinois, as that's where these relatives were from. I just love these old family photographs that show life from another era. There is some kind of stain along the top, left side and bottom edge of the image, but if I didn't clean them up, post them and keep their memories alive, who would?

L&N Depot, Maunie, Illinois, 1909

I had lots of relatives that came from this town from about the mid-1800s. I'll bet they even used to ride on this train.

Friends

18 Jan 2020 3 2 238
My Grandmother Lolove (Garrett) Wright and a friend on the left who was identified on the back of the picture as Ruth Montgomery. Since Lolove was born in 1903, this picture had to have been taken around 1910. My Grandmother was born in a town with the picturesque-sounding name of Rising Sun, located at extreme Southeastern Illinois. It's near Maunie, Illinois, where her parents were from. I suspect she lived in Maunie as well and was only born in Rising Sun for medical reasons.

Family Portrait

An old group portrait from my father's side of the family.

Grandma Wright

Another studio portrait of my Grandmother Wright, my Mom's mother. Her maiden name was Martha Lolove Garrett.

Lolove Garrett

This is a rescan and a crop of a picture I've posted before. I just wanted to see what it would look like in an oval frame. It's my favorite picture of my Grandmother Wright, my Mom's Mother. It was probably taken before 1910.

Lolove And Her Baby Carriage

This was my Grandmother, Martha Lolove Garrett Wright, with her doll and baby carriage. She was born in 1903, so it was probably taken before 1910.
