Eveleigh 1965

Eveleigh was the loco depot serving Sydney based passenger services. It was also a centre for loco construction and heavy overhaul. Another insight into the past was the September 65 (001 - 009) visit itself. I went with two others, one of whose parents organised the visit. The three of us boys aged 12 - 13 caught a train to Redfern and walked in, reported to a manger, gave him indemnity forms signed by our parents, then we were free to wander at will, unescorted, together or alone, around the close-spaced tracks with locos moving back and forth every now and then. It was an eye-opener to see just how dirty a large active steam depot was as a place and as somewhere to work. This didn't put me off though.
