Der Kreidefelsen, Teil der South Downs, ist mit 162 m über dem Meeresspiegel der höchste in Großbritannien und für die Schiffahrt im Ärmelkanal eine Landmarke.

Der 43 m hohe Leuchtturm im Meer vor Beachy Head wurde im Oktober 1902 fertiggestellt. Sein Licht ist bis in eine Entfernung von 26 Seemeilen (42 km) sichtbar.

Ein zuvor in der Nähe auf dem Felsmassiv erbauter Leuchtturm, Belle Tout Lighthouse, war bei Nebel und niedrigen Wolken zu häufig nicht vom Meer aus sichtbar gewesen. Dieser ältere Leuchtturm ist heute eine exklusive Gästeunterkunft.

Dear raingirl, bad translator! The pension is not in the shown new lighthouse at the cliffs feet. There is an elder and now unused lighthouse on the cliffs, where you can take a room.

Mein erster Gedanke war auch: „warum steht der Leuchtturm nicht oben?“ Die Erklärung ist ein"leuchtend". Gegenüber dem Kreidefelsen wirkt der Leuchtturm wie ein Spielzeug. -

A fine capture of one of our most attractive and famous lighthouses Gisela. When we were walking along the top we passed the old lighthouse several times. It was surrounded by scaffolding as they were just then preparing to convert it to a rental property. There were many German voices around even in those days. Der Investor hat das Lighthouse sogar 17 m vom Rand der Klippe zurückversetzt, damit es nicht in Gefahr geriet, abzustürzen. Wir haben dort nicht übernachtet, sondern viel schöner in unserem VW-Bus auf Campingplätzen.
Die Gegend ist so schön, dass man sie im Herzen behält.

In regard to the new lighthouse - the building in your photograph - the view available to the lighthouse keeper must be a bit depressing from certain angles. It was a surprise to learn that the light cast from the original lighthouse on top of the cliff was sometimes not visible to mariners. Must be something to do with trigonometry as well as fog, I guess.
