Wreck of SS Dicky
|
|
|
|
Steamer SS Dicky was shipwrecked on a Caloundra beach which was named after her. The ship sailed from Rockhampton and as it arrived to clear Caloundra Head it met lashing rain and cyclonic winds that sent the ship on her beam ends. Captain James Beattie was forced to beach the ship to avoid hitting the rocks off Moffat Beach.
On 4th February 1893 at 10.35 am the ship grounded stern first on the beach. The Marine Board of Queensland tribunal concluding the Captain showed lack of judgement in not successfully weathering Caloundra Head, for which his licence was suspended for three months.
Dicky Beach is a suburb of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia, located within the Caloundra urban centre.
The area was named after the iron steamboat, the SS Dicky, which ran aground during heavy seas in 1893. It was refloated, but again, heavy seas turned the ship about and back onto the sand where it remains to this day. Dicky Beach remains the only recreational beach in the world to be named after a shipwreck.
Dicky Beach is a patrolled beach, and is home to the Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club. It has been awarded numerous awards, including the 'DHL Queensland Surf Life Saving Club of the Year' in 2009.

This was the site for the first Eumundi Market 24th March 1979. There were three stallholders and a turnover of $30.
Fifteen minutes from Noosa and about an hour and half from Brisbane, the Eumundi Markets are a treasure trove of original artworks, sculptures, furniture, homewares, fashion and jewellery pieces.
For the foodie, the market overflows with coffee, chocolate, cakes and local produce including fresh fruit and vegetables, breads, locally made cheeses and yoghurts. Have your palm read, chat to one of the many health and wellbeing practitioners or just sit back relax and enjoy the musical stylings of some of the local talent.
From simple beginnings, the markets were started in 1979 by two women, Christa Barton and Gail Perry, whose objective was to help the township that had just been dealt an economic blow with the construction of the Eumundi Bypass. The first market boasted three stalls with a modest turnover of $30. Far from entrepreneurs, the two women just wanted to offer the townsfolk a place to sell their goods and produce.
In 1985, the Eumundi Markets had grown to 97 stalls and attracted approximately 143,000 people that year. Today, the market boasts 600 stalls and an annual visitation of 1.6 million people.
The markets are open every Wednesday from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm and every Saturday from 6:30 am to 2:00 pm, every week of the year.

Kangaroo and Joey

On the front lawn (2002), before we had neighbours.
'Kangaroos usually have one young annually. The young kangaroo, or joey, is born alive at a very immature stage, when it is only about 2 cm long and weighs less than a gram. Immediately after birth it crawls up the mother's body and enters the pouch. The baby attaches its mouth to one of four teats, which then enlarges to hold the young animal in place. After several weeks, the joey becomes more active and gradually spends more and more time outside the pouch, which it leaves completely between 7 and 10 months of age.'

Kookaburra Queen at Eagle Street Pier
|
|
|
|
Established in 1986
The Kookaburra River Queen Paddlewheelers are true icons of the Brisbane River, based on the Mississipi, and Murray River Paddlewheelers and celebrate Brisbane's greatest asset - our river.
The vessels were aptly named because the Kookaburra is a native Australian bird that is never seen to drink water - a prophecy that all boat owners would hope to emulate!
Confident that Brisbane was ready for "something nostalgic, old-fashioned and different" the Kookaburra River Queens were born. Millkraft Thompson Boatyards built Kookaburra River Queen I. She was the first wooden paddlewheeler built in Australia in the last century. Launched in 1986 and 1988 respectively, the Queens were crafted mainly from Queensland timbers, the 100 foot keels from ironbark, the sheathed hulls planked with oregon and spotted gum and the decks made from white beech.
After playing a major role in the popular World Expo 88, the vessels have become a part of Brisbane's riverscape for over 20 years.
