I think these are serviceberries, Denis, and they're eaten by birds and small mammals. By people, too, in jam etc. They're sweet, as attested by kiiti on this very site.

They're often called saskatoonberries in Canada, from the Cree word for them, The city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan is named for them.
