Seit etwa 5000 Jahren wurden im Gebiet des Riotinto nach Kupfererzen, Gold und Silber geschürft. Selbst König Salomo soll hier im 10.Jhd. v.Chr. Gold von hier für seinen jüdischen Tempel in Jerusalem erhalten haben. Heute ist die Mine wieder verstärkt in Betrieb, da das Kupfer auf dem Weltmarkt sehr teuer geworden ist.
