Der venezianische Löwe in Salò erinnert daran, dass in den Jahren 1426 bis 1797 die umliegenden Gemeinden als "Magnifica Patria" zur Republik Venedig gehörte. Salò war deren Hauptstadt, und alle 16 Monate wurde von Venedig ein "Proveditore di Salò e Capitano della Riviera" hier her entsand.
