The Column of the Immaculate Conception was dedicated on December 8, 1857 to celebrate the recently adopted church dogma of the Immaculate Conception. The column was of ancient Roman origin. It was topped with a sculpture of the Virgin Mary and the base consisted of of four Old Testament figures.
