Passages Parisiens - 1. La Galerie Vivienne

Passages Parisiens - 1. La Galerie Vivienne
Happy World Photography Day - 19/08/2022 !

As a Paris lover I had to pay tribute on that day to the Parisian covered passages, to their charm of yesteryear and to their often remarkable architecture.
They are a set of lanes traced in the middle of buildings, housing commercial and artistic galleries, restaurants and tea rooms - some of them in Art Deco style, and covered with a glass roof that shelters from bad weather and lets in the daylight.
Most of these passages were built in the first half of the 19th century to allow a wealthy clientele to shop and dine under cover.

The Galerie Vivienne (main photo and PiP 1, 2, 3), 1823, close to the Palais-Royal, is one of the most emblematic. It was listed as a historical monument in 1974.
With a length of 176 m, it is decorated in a neo-classical Pompeian style designed by François-Jacques Delannoy, with mosaics, paintings and sculptures exalting trade. It includes caducei, anchors and horns of plenty that adorn the half-moon windows, as well as goddesses and nymphs decorating the rotunda.
The gallery is covered by an elegant glass roof
In 2019, the gallery is twinned with the famous Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert in Brussels.

Oh! I almost went there in June when I was in Paris (for just a couple days sadly). How nice to see it here. I had read all about this particular example and really wanted to see it. Your photo shows it off so well (I saw lots of photos, this one is better than most I saw when researching it).

Do you go there often? Are you drawn by the architecture or perhaps the nicety of being able to shop inside? Paris has so much great architecture, why did you decide on this one for our event day?

Happy (belated) World Photography Day!
