A blusterous day on Ben Stack
Folder: Scotland
Ben Stack is a splendid isolated little mountain in the north-west corner of Scotland. Perhaps not as grand as its impressive neighbours, Arkle and Foinaven to the north, but very fine nevetheless.
At the time of our visit on 21st June 2018, it was very windy indeed; at times difficult to keep one's feet, and the clouds more or less at summit elevation sometimes restricted the views.

Ben Stack: view north-east towards Arkle
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (15)
Descending from Ben Stack, at the bealach of Coire nam Mang, a final view of the dramatic south-west flank of Arkle. The main bulk of Arkle is comprised of south-easterly dipping, pale grey Cambrian quartzites of the Ardvreck Group, which lie with great unconformity over the Lewisian Gneiss visible in the lower part of the photo.
Ben Stack: view north over knock and lochan from Coire nam Mang
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (14)
Descending from Ben Stack, at the bealach of Coire nam Mang, looking north over the chaotic appearance of the ice-smoothed knock and lochan landscape.
Ben Stack: view west to Eddrachillis Bay (2)
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (13)
Descending from Ben Stack, at the bealach of Coire nam Mang and now below cloud base, looking west over the knock and lochan landscape towards Eddrachillis Bay and the Stoer peninsula in the far distance.
Ben Stack: easterly view to Arkle from Coire nam Mang bealach
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (12)
Descending from Ben Stack, at the bealach of Coire nam Mang and still more or less at cloud base, looking easterly over the knock and lochan landscape towards Arkle and Loch Stack.
Ben Stack: view to Arkle from Coire nam Mang bealach
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (11)
Descending from Ben Stack, at the bealach of Coire nam Mang and still more or less at cloud base, looking north-eastwards over the knock and lochan landscape towards Arkle.
Ben Stack: view south-east over Leathad na Stioma and Loch More
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (10)
Descending the summit cone of Ben Stack, looking south-east over Leathad na Stioma and Loch More.
Ben Stack: view west to Eddrachillis Bay (1)
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (9)
View west from the summit ridge of Ben Stack to the Lewisian Gneiss knock and lochan landscape far below and Eddrachillis Bay in the distance.
Ben Stack: view east over Loch Stack
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (8)
View east from the summit ridge of Ben Stack to Loch Stack in the knock and lochan landscape far below. The west-facing flank of Arkle is just visible to the left, below the cloud base.
Ben Stack: Jan on southern summit
A windy, blusterous day on Ben Stack (7)
Somewhat surprisingly the trig point is not located on the highest point of Ben Stack, but on lower ground to the south of the main (NW) summit. Here the cloud has blown in again and mostly obscuring the view to the south. Sitting down to avoid being blown over.
