Folder: Scotland
A walk from North Fearns to the abandoned village of Hallaig on the island of Raasay.
Hallaig path at North Fearns
A walk to the abandoned settlement of Hallaig on the island of Raasay
Returning along the path from Hallaig past the modern hamlet of North Fearns there are lovely views of the mountains of Skye in the distance.
Hallaig path with milestone
A walk to the abandoned settlement of Hallaig on the island of Raasay
The path to Hallaig from the modern hamlet of North Fearns has milestones along the way, perhaps dating from the late 18th century, i.e. before the Clearances.
The numbers seem to refer to the distance from Clachan. The 4 Mile stone is at the side of the path on the lower right.

Fallen boulder bounce trail from An Leac cliffs
A walk to the abandoned settlement of Hallaig on the island of Raasay
The path to Hallaig passes by the An Leac cliffs, comprised of the Beinn na' Leac Sandstone (Middle Jurassic). These cliffs are the haunt of ravens and golden eagles.
In the foreground a small boulder has recently fallen from the cliffs, leaving a 'bounce trail' in the grassy slope marking its route of decent.
Dùn Caan and shower cloud from Hallaig
A walk to the abandoned settlement of Hallaig on the island of Raasay
Another great view of Dùn Caan, the highest point on Raasay (444 m), seen from the abandoned settlement of Hallaig. Dùn Cann, like much of eastern Raasay, is composed of Jurassic sedimentary rocks. However, the summit is capped with a basalt lava flow, part of the Palaeocene age Skye Lava Group. The basalt displays excellent columnar cooling joints, nicely picked out by the oblique sunshine.
Hallaig house and Dùn Caan
A walk to the abandoned settlement of Hallaig on the island of Raasay
Ruined houses and enclosures at Hallaig, abandoned as a result of the brutal Clearances in the early 19th century.
Hallaig, its field systems and enclosures occupy a raised undulating platform facing east, overlooking the Inner Sound and the Applecross peninsula of the mainland. In this photo the summit of Dùn Cann (444 m) overlooks the settlement.
