I saw this in England in fields not all that far from London as recently as the 1970s. (Yes. England can get the odd very hot day too!).

In meiner Kindheit knoteten machten die alten Menschen an die Enden eines Taschentuches Knoten und so benutzten sie dieses als Kopfbedeckung.
