The physical constraints of the branch, tight curves, steep inclines and a RA5 route availability, restrict the size and weight of the motive power so Black 5s and K4 "The Great Marquess" are used most frequently.
The climbs to Raven Rock and Luib Summits have been problematic in recent years, with trains slipping to a stand and struggling to restart. On one occasion, in 2008, it was necessary to divide a train in Glen Carron and take the two portions to Achnasheen separately.
Running tender-first on the Eastbound leg doesn't help and the Network Rail grease pumps on the tighter curves do little to improve adhesion on a six-coupled locomotive.
More recently, train lengths have been reduced to six or seven coaches.
As more and more people are chasing these workings, a remote location is essential, in order to get an uninterrupted viewpoint and avoid the drag-racing on the adjacent roads.
