The city of Athens had passed a law reducing penalties for marijuana possession and use, and a group of supporters of the initiative gathered in front of the courthouse -- the usual place for such events -- to stage a smoke-in, as this kind of event would have been called a generation ago.

After the long, uphill course, and the obstacle course, and the slip-n-slide, the exhausted runners had to crawl under a net through chigger-infested grass while soaking wet before they could continue to the finish line at Peden Stadium.
