The great Torridon Fire of 2011

On 30 April 2011 a wild fire started on the mountain Liathach, just above the village of Torridon. This was one of many wild fires starting around the same time in the UK following a very dry period (yes even in Scotland!). The fire burned for several days, with a helicopter being drafted in on day 2 to prevent distruction of property and ancient woodlands. By day 3 the fire had been controlled. …

Torridon fire 6: Helicopter with water bucket attached
A helicopter was brought in and used initially to survey the fire. Then a bucket was attached and it spent the rest of the day fighting the fire - starting with the front shown in the photo Torridon fire 5

The fire didn't have a lot of strength, so was really just burning very dry material - note that only the bottom of these trees were caught.
