Scotland's Pine Martens are one of the rarest creatures in the UK. This one is raiding our Red Squiirel feeder late on a summer evening

With an estimated population of just 3700, pine martens are a protected species in Scotland — and have been since 1988. They weigh 1-2kg and measure 60-70cm from nose to tail, making them roughly the size of a domestic cat.

What a great animal (sorry squirrels). Like a squirrel's older cousin almost. I assume you were behind class watching this for it to not care about you.

Fortunately inadvertently they are on the side of Red Squirrels, which are so much lighter than Greys that they can excape on flimsy branches which wont take the wait of a Pine Martin, so they tend to eat Greys, which is great news for the Red population. The Feeders are about three feet from plate glass windows with reflective coating.
