Ridding the garden of tree stumps

Large protruding tree stumps can be unsightly in a garden - with three close to each other, I had been looking at DIY solutions to ridding us of them. Dynamite would have been fun but would have upset the neighbours and would have attracted the anti-terrorism lads.
The solution? You take a chain saw and cut a cross into the stump as deep as the ground around it at the edges and deeper into its core.
Blow our the sawdust you create in doing this - those channels will create a wind tunnel for the next stage. Pour a generous quantity of diesel or fuel oil into the cuts made.
Build up and light a fire of small twigs initially on top of the crosscut. Keep adding to it. Gradually the stump itself will start burning from the inside out reducing to ash within 12-24 hrs depending on its size. Have fun and take care in the process not to burn your house down!
