Pestel and Mortar - this was old when Christ was a boy...


Found on an expedition along the shore of the Dead Sea organized by the American Centre of Oriental Research, Amman Jordan, in 1982. It was lying upside down, its base barely protruding from the other scattered rocks on the surface, but sufficiently for me to trip on it, and uncover it. Beginners' luck, was the cry from the assembled thirty or so guest archaeology professors from the USA we were showing round the site, where I was a volunteer.
