To expose for the moon, or the view?

Day before full moon and a clear sky. With the naked eye you can make out the craters, as in the right image (400mm), but as soon as you zoom out to include the moon in the whole picture, exposure goes haywire, and turns the moon into a circle of bright light...there is only so much even a modern digital camera can cope with in terms of contrast.
