Over the vale and far away (1 x note)

11 Mar 2023 20 28 230
The distant hills are part of the Yorkshire Wolds, an area of low hills in the counties of the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire in north-eastern England. The name also applies to the district in which the hills lie. The view above is from Irton Moor (above Scarborough) looking south west over the Vale of Pickering toward a small area of the wolds. Wold is an Anglian form of the word, as in other parts of England, different variations can be found. Over the years the meaning changed from "forest" to "high forest land". When the forests were cleared, the name was retained and applied to upland areas in general.

Tabular Hills escarpment track (3 x PiPs)

08 Jan 2022 17 25 267
The track ascends 117 mtrs from Troutsdale through the trees on the escarpment to the higher ground of the Tabular Hills*, and Wykeham Forest. The middle shot from the track shows a glimpse of farm buildings in Troutsdale. Only in winter is this view easily visible. *The Tabular Hills mark the southern boundary of the North York Moors National Park. Their name comes from their distinctive table top shape, they rise up gently from the south and end abruptly in a series of steep north facing headlands.
