Scarborough Lifeboat Station is a *Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) operated lifeboat station in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. A lifeboat was established at Scarborough in 1801, which makes it the third oldest lifeboat station in the United Kingdom.

Since its opening in 1801 to the present day, a total of 16 crewmen have been lost whilst attempting rescues from the Scarborough lifeboat. In 2016 this new station was opened on the site of the previous one. The station has two lifeboats; the Frederick William Plaxton, a Shannon-class lifeboat (see PiP) and the John Wesley Hillard III, an Inshore lifeboat.

*The RNLI was founded in 1824, as the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Lives and Property from Shipwreck. Thirty years later, in 1854, the name was changed to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution - the RNLI - as it is known today. The RNLI is the largest charity that saves lives at sea around the coasts of the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man, as well as on some inland waterways. It is one of several lifeboat services operating in the same area.

Most of the members of the RNLI lifeboat crews are unpaid volunteers. The RNLI has 238 lifeboat stations and operates 444 lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards operate on more than 200 beaches: the lifeguards are paid by local authorities, but the RNLI provides equipment and training.

Thanks so much for your kind comment Rosa. Yes they deserve the best, and the building is used for much more than a shelter for the boats, training, education of the public etc.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, Doug
