Saint Andrews, Fife - Scotland

The town of Saint Andrews on the cliffs above the rocks at the southern end of the West Sands beach.

Step Rock tidal swimming pool

The Step Rock swimming tidal pool was opened in 1902 closing in 1978. The buildings and small pools on the left are now part of an aquarium which presently occupies the site. The larger main tidal pool looks to be abandoned.

A great place to spend a summer day. The last time I swam here would have been in the summer of 1959. As a young lad then living may miles from the sea I thought it was heaven, although a little chilly at times!

A fantastic main picture Doug! I wonder how many tidal swimming pools there are in the UK? I know of one other, in Perranporth, Cornwall. It's a long time since you swan in one! I can well imagine it would be chilly coming from the North Sea....and even cold in Cornwall.

Thanks very much for your visit and kind comment Rosa. I doubt there are many such pools left now (perhaps we are not so hardy these days!) There are the remains of another tidal pool in St, Andrews, at the the castle just along the coast from the Step Rock. You can just about see the outline in the water of two sides of the castle pool in the attached picture. I have no idea how old this pool is, but certainly older the the Step Rock I would think.
