Is this marble? I mostly know bayes for his ceramics, the big figure of time outside selfridges, the wonderful nursery rhymes on the chalton st. flats, doultons etc.

Yes I think it is, I know it was incredibly difficult to photograph due to the lack of decent light. I'm not sure Bayes' originally intended his relief to be a war memorial. Apparently it was originally called 'The Dying Soldier' when it was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1917.
