If your family doesn't pay a maintenance fee, they stack up your headstones in a pile, and throw your bones into blue plastic bins and send them to the landfill.

A cemetery worker opened up one of the bins full of human remains and encouraged me to take a picture - I couldn't do it, it seemed too disrespectful of the dead. And it was completely horrifying.

I think, Cubans have another relationship to the dead ;-)
Although I was there several times, I didn't see this part of the cemetery.

That could well be. I just figured that it was inevitable given how crowded the cemetery is that they re-use space. I just found it odd given the Catholic tradition.
