boat trip on Lake Inle

There were a lot of stupas with gold coloured paint here, and elsewhere in Burma. Understandably much more economic than gold leaf, but it looks so tacky close up. Just leaving it raw, or painting it white would have seemed preferable, but there is probably a reason for it.
