The ruins are the roman theater in Mainz. It was excavated 20 years ago (I had the honor to help a little bit). There was space for 10.000 visitors. The actual theater in Mainz offers space for 800 visitors.
When the station was built over 100 years ago, the workers must have found parts of the theater, but it wasn't excavated.
