To tell you the truth, Bill. I walked it, aged 13, with my French mate (school exchange - we are still in contact) and with my great-grandfather's 22 air rifle with the sole intention of getting a few rabbits for the pot! The banks were crawling with them! We were given the whole day to do this and, mission accomplished after 10 minutes, we decided to walk as far as we could along the tracks. I recall that walking on sleepers is awkward as they are positioned at between one and two paces so you are endlessly changing from one sleeper a step to three steps every two sleepers, if you see what I mean. Better now that the sleepers have gone!!
The ensuing rabbit stew was delicious!
Best wishes, Andy

Looks like you had the time of your life in your teens Andy, spent mine on the railway lines and down on the river thames, always coming home a bit scruffy which didn't please mum ;)) All the best, Bill

I forgot to add that this hadn't become an officially designated walk yet and the tunnels were unlit. Good fun if a bit scary at times!

I remember looking through a large gap in the doors of this tunnel on my very first visit to Derbyshire about 18yrs ago and it did look a bit scary looking into the black void. have walked them all since then a few times over ;)) Keep well...Regards, Bill

Interesting. I'm talking about just after closure and before any doors. When did this become a regularly used walkway (and, I guess, cycle-way), I wonder?.

The trail and all the tunnels 8.5mls each way from Bakewell to Blackwell mill (Chee Dale) opened fully to the public in May 2011. at the cost of £2.25 million, funded from [Department of Transport] the lights in the tunnels come on automatically in daylight and turn off when dark. they also have a 2hr emergency lighting if the tunnel lights fail. it is planned to extend into Buxton. Phew! got to lie down now! ;))...Best Wishes, Bill.
