Madeira - the old road R 101

Madeira - the old road R 101
We travelled through and around the island of Madeira in 1998, on BMW F650 motorcycles, just the right size of bike for these wonderful roads. This is the old dramatic R 101 road, through waterfalls and old tunnels and the Bridal Veil Waterfall, seen from Miradouro do Véu da Noiva. Maybe I post a report in the future. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

Und damals gab es noch die richtigen Küstenstraßen, da sind heute viele nicht mehr fahrbar. Zum Beispiel der ganze Tunnel vor dem Wasserfall ist runter gekracht. Die 650er waren genau richtig. Mit Autos ist es da sinnfrei, nur Probleme bei Gegenverkehr. Danke Dir! So schaut's heute aus:

You're right. There are other waterfalls, which offer this advantage of a "car wash". We were travelling with motorcycles, so we preferred this type ;-)

Wenn man bedenkt, dass vor nicht einmal 100 Jahren diese Straßen schon ein Fortschritt waren! Ich war da 2012, auf vier Rädern. Aber, wie du schreibst: die alten Küstenstraßen waren, bis auf kurze Teilstrecken, alle schon außer Betrieb.
Schöne Aufnahme - "um's Eck" in Sao Vincente hatten wir gewohnt.

Ah, immer wieder schön "gemeinsam" am gleichen Ort gewesen zu sein. Ich wusste das bis vor kurzem nicht, aber da ist wirklich einiges zu an der Nordküste, was wir damals gefahren sind.

Is the road one-way? Those shelf roads can be really nerve-wracking if there's oncoming traffic!

No, the road was (incredible) not one-way. That's one of the reason why we rented motorcycles and not a car. For you as geologist it could be intersting to view the two links I provided. The road is gone in the meantime:

An amazing coastal landscape................and it's almost beyond belief that someone thought of putting a road along there in the first place, let alone a two-way road! I really like the lush green vegetation on the cliffs and the light is gorgeous! Excellent work Berny.

Indeed, it cannot be more closed ;-) There are many such dramatic roads on Madeira, but compared to 1998 many are closed or even destroyed now. Thanks, Keith!

Der Straßenbau da war sicher der Wahnsinn und gefährlich. Leitplanken sind hier wohl ein Fremdwort ;-) Sind ja auch nicht schön, oder? Hast Du die Links gesehen? Die Straße existiert nicht mehr, der ganze Tunnel ist runter gerauscht!

Uuups...die Natur hatte wohl keinen Bock mehr auf Verkehr...auf den Galapagos Inseln ist auch ein Bogen eingestürzt..nichts hält wohl ewig :)
