St. George's Morning

St. George's is the capital of Grenada and was founded by the French in 1650. It is surrounded by a hillside of an old volcano crater. There are around 34000 citizens.
Before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, Grenada was inhabited by the indigenous Arawaks and later by the Island Caribs. Granada is independent since 1974, the area is 349 km² and population is around 112000.
The island was invaded by US troops in 1983 ("they didn't like the left government") and a pro US government was reinstated. Mr. Reagan was president back then, his main concern was, that Cuban workers were prensent in Grenada, helping to built a new airstrip to allow commercial jets to land, but some US military analysts argued that the only reason for constructing such a long and reinforced runway was so that it could be used by heavy military transport planes. No proof was given, as usual, as one may say.
On 7 September 2004, after being hurricane-free for 49 years, the island was directly hit by Hurricane Ivan, resulting in 39 deaths and damage or destruction to 90% of the island's homes.
