Carretera_Austral

The old and original name of Carretera Austral was not Ruta 7, but 'General Augusto Pinochet'.
He was dictator of Chile between 1973 and 1990 and Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 1973 to 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981. Coming to power by help of the US-CIA, on 11 September 1973 the Chilean Armed Forces overthrew Allende's democratic elected government in a coup, during which the presidential palace, La Moneda, was shelled and Allende committed suicide. Under his regime 10000s were tortured, killed or disappeared. Although he's simply a criminal murderer, this sign still exists in La Junta, (fresh painted!) which is a shame. Even more shame is the fact, that he was never finally condemned under the following democratic regimes after 1990.
