Rana catesbaiana illustra (Enlightened Bullfrog / Erleuchteter Ochsenfrosch) ;-)))

The bullfrog isn't very common within the European Alps, because it doesn't find enough food (mice, fishes, amphibians and other small animals) during wintertime. This individual specimen was seen yesterday at the Pillersee (North Tyrol, Austria). Obviously it has successfilly adapted itself to Light Nutrition.

In den Alpen ist der Ochsenfrosch kaum verbreitet. Dort findet er im Winter nämlich kaum Nahrung (Mäuse, Fische, Amphibien und andere Kleintiere). Dieses gestern am Pillersee gesichtete Exemplar hat sich jedoch offenbar erfolgreich auf Lichtnahrung umgestellt.

Ursprünglich heimisch in Nordamerika, wurde der bis zu 20 cm große und einem Kilo schwere Ochsenfrosch für die Produktion von Froschschenkeln nach Europa eingeführt. In den 1980er/90er Jahren wurden die Kaulquappen auch in Zoohandlungen als Futter vermarktet, so dass es nur eine Frage der zeit war, bis erste Exemplare des Frosches auch in Europa in der freien Natur gesichtet wurden. Dort, wo es warm genug ist, hat er sich sehr aggressiv verbreitet. Er ist sehr gefräßig, verschlingt kleine Amphibien, Fische, Vögel, Mäuse und andere Kleintiere. Er bedroht dadurch die heimische Tiervielfalt. In Italien ist er in der Po-Ebene und rund um Rom verbreitet.
