It was indeed the tradition of the houses in the Alps and usually the stones were taken from local rocks as it was the case of the picture. Building such kind of roofs is an art. There are some villages in the val de l'Arc, where such roofs are compulsory for restructured and new houses, like at Bonneval sur l'Arc.
