Italy, Bagno Vignoni Thermal Pool Taken from Church of San Giovanni Battista

It is an astonishing 50-metre by 30-metre stone basin into which hot spring water, at 49 degrees centigrade, has been gushing since Etruscan times.
The church of San Giovanni Battista in Bagno Vignoni is an ancient parish church, it has a single nave, with a very simple facade. On the portico overlooking the pool is the small chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Siena built in 1660.
Every year on June 24th the feast of San Giovanni is celebrated with a procession around the pool and blessing of the fields. The place was made famous by Saint Catherine Benincasa who stayed there often, in particular between 1362 and 1367.
