Ethiopia, Lalibela, The Bete Medhane Alem Church

Ethiopia, Lalibela, The Bete Medhane Alem Church
Bete (or Biete) Medhane Alem is an Orthodox underground semi-monolithic rock-hewn church located in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It was built during the kingdom of Axum. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lalibela. Biete Medhane Alem (House of the Savior of the World) is home to the Cross of Lalibela.
The term semi-monolithic means in this case that the columns supporting the roof had been made and installed separately.
