Less than 30 km separate these two islands from Azores. That peak is 2351 metres high and the highest point of the Portuguese territory. The photo was taken on the aerodrome of São Jorge, at Queimada, between the aircraft and the terminal.

This mare got loose from the field and was grazing on the roadside - potential danger of accident. I asked a lady who was the mare's owner and she called the owner's brother who came fetch the mare out of the road. This happened at Norte Grande, northern São Jorge, Azores.

"Fajã" is a piece of fertile flat land either on the coast, next to steep cliffs, or on the interior, next to rocks or mounts. One can find "fajãs" at Cape Verde, at Madeira and at Azores.
