Josefa da Lage was a girl of a poor family who fell in love with António de Queirós, a young Cavalry officer of a noble family that wished to marry her, but his father opposed totally to that. Josefa da Lage got pregnant (a scandal in 1812) and died soon after giving birth to Maria Moisés, who was adopted.
This is part of the story and the characters of the novel "Maria Moisés", written by Camilo Castelo Branco, a 19th century novelist who lived his last decades and died at Vila Nova de Famalicão.
