Interesting... most air band ones I've seen here are ground planes or discones.

They are same sorts of antennas I've seen around airports in Australia. The discones and ground planes are well suited to ground to air comms as the both have some uptilt.

The only aviation job I did when I had the two-way business was to install an airband radio in the terminal for the regional airline staff to talk with incoming flights about any lateness, and passenger requirements such as rental vehicles or wheelchairs.
