This was inspired by my recent visit to:
Christopher Wood: Red Riding and other Grimms’ Fairy Tales
January 22 to March 31st 2025
North Gallery Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate.

I was trying to capture the heightened atmosphere, the interior world, a sense of a haunted, blood red wood.

Wood’s work features magical, symbolic figures and signs, what the artist calls ‘an exploration of the interior world of the imagination’. His latest series of prints is inspired by the disconcerting stories of Grimms’ Fairy Tales.

I am probably alone in not thinking Hood follows Red Riding but instead Trilogy (David Peace)

You’re not alone, that was my other reference point. Dark things sometimes go on in the woods. Yorkshire Noir indeed. On my way there today I was passed by a young woman wearing a hoodie and a half mask below her eyes. I think that might have set the atmosphere for my photograph.
