What long memories they have in Palermo! The Normans conquered them way back in 1072, and they're still commemorating the longboats.

John, the idea I got from the guide was that the Normans were invited (by the Pope?) to go in to save the country from the Moorish rulers. At least, Palermo was part of the Phoenician part of the island, as opposed to the Greeks to the East. Or did I remember all that wrong?

I suspect that as a person of Norman heritage I may have opted for an inappropriately glorious version of history, Bob.
