WP2022 WPG - ST B - HOTEL ST. BONIFACE ST BONIFACE HOTEL

WP2022 WPG - ST B - HOTEL ST. BONIFACE ST BONIFACE HOTEL
POSTCARD

Date: Not evident. Unposted.

Publisher / Photographer: Lyall Commercial.

Notation: I have had some difficulty finding information on this building/business. The 1911 Henderson Directory has its address as 21-27 Notre Dame Avenue, St. Boniface. No such number exists today. Notre Dame begins at Tache - running east, with house numbers in the 100s.

Checking with Hatheway's map of Winnipeg in 1911, it is evident that Notre Dame originally ran straight through Tache to the river bank - land now repurposed as Parc Joseph Royal.

Given that the odd numbers on Tache are on the north side, it is likely that the St. Boniface Hotel was as well. In fact, I am pretty sure that it sat at the NW corner of Tache & Notre Dame.

Back to the image on the postcard... I believe that the paved street on the right side of the picture was likely Tache and the dirt street on the left would have been Notre Dame.

Okay - the Free Press adds quite a bit. The 171 Dumoulin location was called the Jean Block when it was built c. 1880. It was a boys' school in the 1880s until the school relocated to St. Boniface College and then became apartments. Around 1912-13, it became the St. George Hotel and was re-named the St. Boniface Hotel in the 1920s. This is according to a Free Press article from October 28, 1970, on which morning the Hotel burned to the ground. The building that it occupies now must be the replacement. So maybe the story was that Ireton bought the St. George and renamed it the St. Boniface at some point after the original St. Boniface, in your photo, had been sold to the nuns.

In 1918 it became the Convent of the Precious Blood. By the 1960's, it was a rooming house.
