Die Geranie, die richtig Pelargonie (Pelargonium) heißt, stammt ursprünglich aus Südafrika – hier gibt es über allein 250 Wildarten der Geranie. Besonders viele Sorten findet man rund um die Küstenregion von Kapstadt. Auch in anderen Ländern sind die pflegeleichten und hitzeresistenten Pflanzen zu finden.
Die Geranie gehört zur Familie der Storchschnabelgewächse (Geraniaceae) und wird in Deutschland zunächst in drei Formen unterschieden: Hänge-Geranien (Pelargonium peltatum) und aufrecht stehende Geranien (Pelargonium zonale), welche in der Regel lang als lang blühende und widerstandsfähige Sorten mit großen Blüten gezüchtet werden.
