108 chortens on Dochu La

The 108 memorial chortens on Dochu La pass were erected by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother.
Early in the morning in good weather the main Himalayan chain with 7570m high Gangkhar Puensum can be seen from there. Once the sun is up the clouds creep in so we only caught brief glimpses of the high peaks (see note).

Herzlichen Dank, Dida! Ich hätte gerne dort oben übernachtet (es gibt eine Lodge), dann hätte man vor Sonnenaufgang die Berge richtig gesehen! Kann man sich leider nicht aussuchen, Route und Hotels sind festgelegt, Tourismus ist staatlich geregelt.

I really like all the ornate and identical chortens ( had to look that up to see exactly what they were). The colours and detail are very attractive.

I have to admit that I've never heard of a chorten before, and I have never seen the like. I think it's a good idea to control tourism here in such a special place. The snowy peaks in the PiP give one an idea of the absolute grandeur of the place.

Thank you so much, Amelia! Chortens aren't part of our European heritage... Yes, the Bhutanese have done well with controlling tourism. There's a lot of Cannabis growing wild everywhere in the country, just imagine if all the backpackers could get in unrestricted. Instead the Bhutanese feed Cannabis to their pigs, it makes them happy and content;-)
