Valletta was founded in 1566 by the Knights of St John as a fortified city with a strict grid pattern built on a hilly peninsula (Monte Sciberras). The shallow steps can be found in many of the city's streets because the knights couldn't manage anything higher in their heavy suits of armour. Inset a photo looking in the other direction down to Grand Harbour.
