Lihou causeway

Lihou causeway
Lihou Island lies off Guernsey's west coast. It is connected to L'Erée headland (seen here with Fort Saumarez) via a causeway accessible at (very) low tide. It is essential to observe the causeway opening times to avoid getting stranded on Lihou, because once the water gets ankle high it is too dangerous to cross.

The mauve stuff is an encrusting seaweed of the lithophyllum or lithothamnium species.

Schönen Dank, Maik! Die haben geleuchtet, aber sie sehen ziemlich unappetitlich aus;-)
Der Leuchtturm ist übrigens ein napoleanischer Wachturm, auf den die Deutschen im Krieg draufgebaut haben (die Kanalinseln waren Teil des Atlantikwalls)

Vielen Dank, Lothar! Das orangerote ist ein Schwamm, das fliederfarbene eine Alge:-) Ich hatte mir vor Ort ein kleines Büchlein dazu gekauft;-)

Absolutely, with spring tides up to 15m high this is a must;-) Sometimes the causeway is closed for days on end...
