Earlier this year I bought the Canon 100-300mm USM lens from a secondhand dealer for £49. The dealer warned that it had ‘dusty optics’; if you research the subject of dust in lenses on the web you soon discover that a shovel full of dust in a lens might make a difference to its performance, but a few miniscule specs seldom impair the image.
Near where I often buy my groceries there is a recreation ground, and this event was taking place. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve taken a camera ‘just in case’ and for once it was worthwhile. A triumph of hope over experience, as Samuel Johnson remarked, although he was referring to the subject of remarriage, as opposed to habitually taking a camera everywhere.

For almost forty years these elegant machines have been plying the London to Bristol railway. Soon they will be superseded by new electrified trains.
