Hornsea, and Other Treasures

Hornsea, 1997

On a family trip to Hull, I had time on my hands and visited Hornsea out of season. It was a bit desolate, but this seaside scene with its vanishing perspective took my eye and I recorded it with a film camera. Unfortunately I overlooked the need to add exposure when shooting into the light and consequently the foreground was in deep shadow in the print. For years I thought of it as a missed opportunity, but scarcely worth a long journey to remedy. Then I discovered a piece of software which could lift the shadows. It looks a bit over-processed, but I can live with that.

Hornsea, 1997 (B&W Edit)

This is the third occasion I have posted a fresh edit of this photograph originally captured on colour negative film in 1997. This version benefits from a fairly robust black and white conversion. Thus far it is the closest I have got it to a state I regard as visually invigorating.

Picture Picture

I went there only once and stayed for maybe half-an-hour. I think it was October; certainly after the season had ended, and the place looked closed. Maybe nothing much happens even when the warm days are upon it. So I took a picture, and I've spent far more time messing around with that picture than I ever did at the seafront taking it. They say the place is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life, a magnet for those seeking a tranquil coastal retreat. I'd agree with that. There was no suggestion of hustle, nor bustle, and the tranquility was like Mogadon.
