Chest Tombs in Edington Priory Churchyard

A chest tomb is a memorial shaped like a stone box, the whole of which is above ground. The body of its subject was usually buried beneath the memorial, not in the chest itself. The chief advantage of this type of memorial is that it is more obvious than a headstone, and it provided its sculptor with five surfaces for decoration. Many chest tombs are semi-ruinous and in a poor state of repair.
