Boarding and alighting from so many trains there, not to mention meeting the prototype HST late one afternoon.

There have been many recent changes at this railway station. You will possibly remember many of them. Over to the left, but out of view, there is a car park which was previously several sidings chiefly, but not exclusively, devoted to coal wagons for the merchant in Union Road. Beyond was an engine shed. Nearby, and accessed via platform 2 (the nearest in the picture) was platform 3 where the trains for Calne arrived and left. Platform 2 had a nice old-fashioned waiting room with horsehair stuffed benches and a sturdy large table. I think there was a further waiting room exclusively for ladies. I recall three red fire buckets full of sand suspended nearby. Platform 1 - furthest away in the picture - was particularly long for mailbags to be unloaded close to the sorting office (now removed to some distant industrial estate). The sorting office yard populated by Morris 1000 P.O. vans; no other types for years. They fetch strong money on the vintage vehicle market now. Platform tickets. Left luggage. The Station Master's office. Railway employees at work, even into the evenings. I could go on ...
