Three Lens Outfit

I remain fascinated by manual focus lenses on modern digital kit, and in awe of the optical capability and durable engineering of vintage Nikkor prime lenses. This photograph, taken with a Nikon D2Xs and a 24mm f/2.8 AF Nikkor in light from a window, shows, from left to right, a Nikkor-P 105mm f/2.5 made during the early 1970s, a 50mm f/1.8 long nose AI-S Nikkor made circa 1982, and a Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 AI which enjoyed a long production run and judging from its serial number dates from around 1980. An advertisement by Reids of Guildford in a 1979 'Amateur Photographer' magazine gives prices for these lenses (or their nearest equivalent for that year) as follows: 105mm f/2.5 - £168; 50mm f/1.8 - £72; 28mm f/3.5 - £132. They were eye-wateringly expensive at that time and pretty much the preserve of the professional and the well-to-do amateur. Average annual earnings were then around £6,000, which would be about £19,000 p.a. now (2014).
I anticipate that these three lenses will provide a fairly well balanced kit on an APS-C camera. Wide-angle may be a bit neglected but I shall learn to step back a bit, after checking behind me, of course.
