Misty Moorings

A lovely view at Windermere lake in late February. Windermere, in the English Lake District, is the largest, but not quite the deepest, natural lake in England at 10.5 miles long, 1 mile wide and 220ft deep. It is not officially a lake but a mere, its real name is Winder Mere (a 'Mere' is a lake that is broad in relation to its depth) but to avoid confusion with Windermere village, it is known as Windermere Lake. The 'mere' is used for water sports, boating (with over 10,000 boats registered) and has pleasure cruises with two different routes, one in the north end and one in the south end. There are many hotels and holiday resorts around the area, there is also a car ferry across the (roughly) centre of the mere. The deepest 'lake' in England is Wastwater at 243ft and, interestingly, there is only one official 'lake' in the Lake District which is Bassenthwaite Lake.
